Who knew that the shores of Nova Scotia had been visited by aliens? Not I until a few years ago. Murphy and Milo scoffed at aliens and decided to nap while I went exploring. I think they hoped the aliens would get me and probe me like I have allowed the vet to do to them many times in the past. It's just a guess, but they gave me that look.
Anyway, along Highway 3 in Barrington County sits a little museum where the UFO incident of 1967 can be further learned about. A little more history of it can be found on their municipality website here. For me it was just interesting to see what was inside and hear about it. My curiosity had to know what was in there. Sadly, no alien bodies.
It can be hit or miss if someone is there, but there is a phone number on the door to call if no one is there. The man running it that day said he lived nearby. He was also there during the incident and remembers it. A friendly fellow, but he would never admit it was aliens one way or the other. So you aren't going to be greeted by tinfoil hats.
Inside is pretty much what you'd expect. A few alien statues, some newspaper articles, assortment of other little items, and a gift shop. It costs five dollars to get in and should take no more than twenty minutes to look around and read mostly everything. If you're there for a chat it could be a bit longer. So plan accordingly depending on your level of interest.
Then head on a couple minutes, if that, down Highway 3 toward Yarmouth and you'll be at the actual crash site. There is a big sign, so you can't miss it.
Also there is this guy standing at the edge of the parking lot. Who doesn't want to pose with an alien lobster at a UFO crash site in Shag Harbour, Nova Scotia? Even the aliens get their maritimer on it would seem.
And he or she clearly comes in peace with those hands up, so hop out and take a picture or two and enjoy the water view.
A little gazebo sits off to the side as well. Along with a picnic table and a bench near the water. A nice little spot to rest and eat after stretching your legs and taking selfies with the alien lobster.
A little write up on the Shag Harbour UFO Incident is on the inside of the gazebo as well. It's a quick read and gives you the basics. A good backup if the museum is closed or you don't want to visit the Shag Harbour UFO Incident Centre.
My Overall Verdict of the Shag Harbour UFO Site
It's neat to hear the stories and see where it happened. Everyone was friendly and the alien lobster was at least something different. The water I've see a thousand times a day all over the place, so that really isn't a draw for me like it might be for others.
Overall I'd recommend it if you were curious on the incident and already in the Barrington region. Whether you are going to the other museums nearby or passing through toward Yarmouth or from Yarmouth to the South Shore of Nova Scotia. I wouldn't recommend the gas it takes to solely go just there though.
Make it a day and stop by the museum and alien lobster in Shag Harbour, Nova Scotia after scoping out other places in the area to visit as well. More on those to come.
